St Joseph’s Special School, Ballytivnan, Sligo, is designated for pupils who have been assessed as having a Mild General Learning Disability. It caters for pupils between the ages of 5 and 18 years.

St Joseph’s Outreach Class, Drumshambo, Co. Leitrim, provides education for pupils assessed as having Moderate/Severe and Profound General Learning Disability.

Both campuses offer a supportive, learning environment to enable the holistic development of the pupil to his/her full potential. There is a strong emphasis on the key areas of literacy, numeracy as well as the pupil’s emotional development, development of self-esteem, social skills and life skills.

The school, although non-denominational and respectful of all religions, has a strong Christian ethos, with pupils prepared for the sacraments.

In both campuses, there is a favourable teacher-pupil ratio, allowing a lot of individual attention. Pupils are grouped in small classes and have access to the additional support from a large number of Special Needs Assistants.

In the main school, classes are divided into junior and senior sections. In the junior section, all pupils are provided access to the full curriculum, providing a broad and balanced education. In addition, senior pupils have access to home economics and woodwork. Senior pupils can now work towards achieving the FETAC Foundation Level Certificate, with the school providing a variety of modules covering key areas such as Communications, Maths, Computer Literacy and Home Economics. There is a strong emphasis on pre-vocational preparation in the final year with pupils undertaking placements in various adult training centres and local businesses.

All pupils have access to a variety of sporting activities and swimming. The school takes part in many extra curricular activities and enters many competitions. Community involvement is an important part of school life and is facilitated through sporting links, choir performances, and visits.
